In January 1993, a chance encounter between a Jamaican who was a US Army Soldier and the Patriarch of the House of Karak started a journey that has borne the fruits in what we now know as House Blue Flames. The meeting resulted in the Jamaican entering a four-year training and mentoring program in Total Authority Transfer under the guidance of Lord Karak and members of House of Karak, a closed Old World-style Family located in Upper Marlboro, MD. In the summer of 1997, the Jamaican completed the Rite of Passage required by the House of Karak to earn the title of Master. He chose the name Ebony Blade, a nickname he had due to his skill with knives and swords, as his name within the House of Karak and remained a member until September 1998, when Lord Karak transitioned from this life to the next.
Lord Karak's transition resulted in the closure of the House of Karak and the sale of the property in Upper Marlboro. Following these events, Master Ebony Blade decided to participate in the local community of Southeast Florida, where he resided, and eventually in February 1999 established his own House which he named the "House of Blades." The House membership grew quickly to over 30 members.
A career opportunity resulted in relocating to Grand Rapids, MI, in June 2003. Unfortunately, many of the House of Blades members could not relocate, and long-distance membership was not what they wanted. Master Ebony Blade and the remaining House of Blades members quickly became active participants in the local community. However, in July 2003, a non-POC person from Michigan named "Master EbonyBlade" contested the validity of Master Ebony Blade's name by claiming that Master Ebony Blade stole the name from him. Quickly recognizing that engaging in a dispute over a pseudonym would be a waste of energy, Master Ebony Blade saw it as an opportunity to evolve and grow. After an epiphany concerning his spiritual affinity with Dragons or the Dracos, in August 2003, Master Ebony Blade changed his name to DragonMaster Sable and adopted House Blue Flames as the new name of the House. House Blue Flames began operating with a hybrid corporate, military-style structure to govern the organization of its membership which had grown in Michigan to 15 members.
Longing for the familiarity of Southeast Florida and warmer weather, DragonMaster Sable exercised an option in his contract and returned home to Florida in the summer of 2004 with House Blue Flames to re-establish an active presence in the Southeast Florida community. Unfortunately, like with House of Blades, many members could not relocate, and long-distance membership was not what they desired. DragonMaster Sable quickly settled down to build and establish House Blue Flames' influence in the Southeast Florida community. Alliances with local clubs and organizations including Command Performance, Club Kink, South Florida Munch, Orlando Munch, Orlando Bash, and Southeast Florida People Involved in Consensual Endeavors (SPICE) were quickly established by members of House Blue Flames. In 2006 DragonMaster Sable was appointed Interim Secretary of SPICE and later elected as the club's Vice President for 2007. He also joined the Beyond Leather staff as their Graphic Designer and Website Developer.
Around December 2007, due to illnesses resulting from his tours in the military that were affecting his ability to function, DragonMaster Sable suspended House Blue Flames and relocated to the upstate area of South Carolina for its cleaner air quality. After meeting Batafurai Dorei in 2008, DragonMaster Sable adopted a Japanese translation of his name and changed it to RyuuzaTatsujin Sable while using "Master Sable" as an alternative form of address to make it easier for those who had trouble pronouncing his name. Later he reactivated House Blue Flames, and he and Batafurai Dorei quickly became active participants in the local upstate community, forming alliances with organizations such as SC Lock and CLOAK, as well as several Leather Houses in the area. He continued to collaborate with the Beyond Leather organization and was able to attend the 1st Beyond Leather Conference in 2008.
Once again, the warm weather and beaches of Southeast Florida beckoned, and Master Sable returned home in the summer of 2013 with House Blue Flames to re-establish an active presence in the Southeast Florida community. He created alliances with the Orlando Woodshed, the Black Door, and the Submission Events. These alliances motivated Master Sable to start and co-host the Journey Munch in September 2014 with his long-time friend destny and launched its monthly meetings in November 2016. He later founded the Gateway for Alternative Lifestyles Center in 2018 and produced the Journey Conference in 2019.
In January 2021, House Blue Flames opened its doors to receive new members through the Journey Pathways, a leadership and service training program. The Journey Pathways program has since evolved into the Blue Flames Institute.
August 2022 witnessed the evolution of House Blue Flames into a Faith-Based Leather Organization through the ordination of Master Sable, Lady Sa'Vage, and Batafurai Dorie. With those ordinations House Blue Flames received its charter as an unincorporated Faith-Based Organization (FBO) under 26 U.S. Code § 508 (c)(1)(A) and § 6033 (3)(A)(i), totally tax-exempt under the 26 U.S. Code to meet human need wherever, whenever, and however possible.
In January 2023, House Blue Flames launched the "Journey Through Admissions" program to qualify prospective candidates for the "Basic Cadet Leadership Training", a prerequisite course for the Blue Flames Institute's, Leather Leadership Training Course. Three students (Cadets) qualified to enter the Basic Cadet Leadership Training in August 2023 as House Blue Flames celebrated its 20th Anniversary and launched The Flames Tribune.
House Blue Flames continues to evolve and change, and its members will come and go. Its legacy is and will continue to be the product of the dedication and commitment of persons who are loyal and devoted to its cause.
